Overview

This biomedical engineering project focused on developing a compact sample preparation cartridge for biological analysis. The cartridge enables rapid, automated cleaning of biological samples to prepare them for downstream analysis tools like Oxford Nanopore sequencing.

The design prioritizes minimal form factor, fast processing time, and reliable performance in a production environment.

Technical Implementation

  • Structural Components: SLA-printed parts and resin guides for linear-motor plunger mechanism
  • Sealing Technology: Custom silicone-cast burstable seals that fail under controlled pressure
  • Mould Design: Scalable, modular moulds with top/bottom alignment and shared mating features for batch production
  • Material Processing: Cast in shore 60A silicone with vacuum degassing for high-yield, void-free parts
  • Quality Control: Implemented processes to ensure consistent seal performance and cartridge reliability

Key Challenges & Solutions

  • Precision Sealing: Designed burstable seals that maintain integrity during handling but fail predictably during operation
  • Scalable Manufacturing: Created modular mould system allowing batch production while maintaining part quality
  • Material Properties: Selected appropriate silicone hardness and implemented degassing to eliminate voids
  • Integration: Ensured compatibility with existing laboratory equipment and workflows

Results & Impact

The cartridge successfully reduces sample preparation time and improves consistency for biological analysis. The design was presented at an international conference, demonstrating its innovation in biomedical engineering.

This work contributed to advancing point-of-care diagnostics by enabling faster, more reliable sample preparation in compact formats.
